First let me say thanks to the great cast and crew of Romeo & Juliet. Your hard work and dedication really paid off.

Now, here are a few opportunites for actors in the area that you might be interested in:

For those of you who just cannot get enough of Shakespeare, Janus Theatre of Elgin is performing a minimalistic version of the great Scottish play, MacBeth, this weekend at the Elgin Art Showcase. It has gotten great reviews so far and only runs about 75 minutes. If you have the chance, I recommend going to see what many consider to be one of Shakespeare's greatest plays.

If you aren't able to see the show, but can't get enough of Shakespearean language, Janus Theatre is offering Speak the Speech!-Working with Shakespeare's Words with Jackie Davies on Saturday, November 13th from 1pm to 5pm at the Elgin Arts Showcase. Registration costs $20. For more information, visit the Janus Theatre blog.

Finally, if you are attending the Illinois High School Theatre Festival this year, there is an opportunity to contribute to this year's theme: "Scenes from Life." The Theatre: Scenes from Life Project is a preregistered student workshop that culminates with a Friday evening performance in the KCPA Great Hall. Scenes include the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet, the soda fountain scene from Our Town, "Tradition" from Fiddler on the Roof, and others. If you are interested in participating, please register online or visit the Festival website at www.illinoistheatrefest.org for more information. Registration deadline is Tuesday, November 22nd.

All students attending Theatre Fest:

We will not be leaving today, Thursday, January 7th, due to the snow. We will be leaving Cary-Grove HS tomorrow (Friday, January 8th) at 4:30 am. Please be at the school by 4:15 am with all luggage. We will leave at 4:30 precicely and if you are not on the bus we will leave without you! ;) You do not need to bring the $15 for tonight's dinner (obviously) but you will still need to bring $$ for lunch and dinner on Friday and Saturday.

On another note, we will now be sharing our bus with the students from Crystal Lake Central who are attending the festival, so please be welcoming and friendly.

winter showcase directors

First, let me say how wonderful it was to have so many qualified applicants for the 8 director spots for this year's Winter Showcase. It made the decision process extremely difficult. I ended up looking most closely at the short answer/essay that was included with the application. I want very much for all of you to be able to direct a scene, but with 14 directors, the show would end up being 2 1/2 hours.

I decided to try something different this year. The juniors who were not chosen to direct their own scene have been designated Assistant Directors. These students will be assigned to one of the senior directors to assist them with their scenes. This will give these juniors even more experience and a chance to see some really great directors at work. They will also function as light board operators, props and costumes designers, backstage assistance, etc. These assistant directors will be assigned to a director at the Director Meeting on Thursday at 6pm. If you have any questions or concerns, please speak to me today.

If you are interested in attending the Senior Field Trip to Steppenwolf Theatre's production of Yasmine Reza's ART on Sunday, June 7th at 3 pm, please email Mrs. Whalen or stop by to sign up by 3pm on Friday, May 22. Tickets are limited, so it will be first come first serve. Ticket prices will be around $30 and we will take the train, so you will also need to buy a train ticket. This year's All-State Production is Urinetown the Musical! If you are interested in being a part of this production, please see Mrs. Whalen ASAP. There are lots of positions available to students from around the state. If you would like to audition or apply for a tech position, you must fill out and submit your online application by May 15th. Please visit www.illinoistheatrefest.org for more info. Auditioners must prepare a 1-min comedic monologue and a 1-min song NOT from Urinetown. An accompanist will be provided (no recordings, no a capella auditions). Tech position applicants must submit a prepared portfolio with an audio/visual representation of your best work. Positions available include: stage manager, set construction, painting, lighting, sound, costume, make-up, props, and more as well as all orchestra positions.
